Albany is home to the world’s only intact whaling centre, where much of the infrastructure was left as is when the industry closed in 1978.

All the different buildings remain as does one of the old whaling chase boats. Following the path around the exhibits was both interesting and confronting. They don’t hold back on the details and the footage and photos are gruesome. But it also tells the story of the people and how the industry came to its end. We spent a few hours there and left informed and a little sickened.

Thankfully that chapter of plundering the natural world is done.
