Today was all about a tree, the Tree of Knowledge at Barcaldine.

With a decent day of driving from Lake Maraboon to Barcaldine we decided to take it easy on our arrival. With time in a playground achieved for the kids, we decided to walk up to the Tree of Knowledge. It was the site of the Shearers Strike and the spiritual home of the Australian Labor Party.

Politics aside, the tree is special. Even the kids found the tree and its story interesting. It was poisoned in 2006 and so has been immortalised with a beautiful combination of its preserved trunk and a representation of its spread at its peak. We were asked “who poisoned the tree?” so many times it got pretty annoying.

We even went back for a final night-time visit to see it lit up in the dark. A very special tree.
