Abby’s Mum had given us a heads-up – weather was on the way. Perhaps an early start to the wet season and it was heading our way.

Our plans to swing into Tunnel Creek Gorge on our way to Windjana Gorge for a night looked in trouble. But were they? Were the Bureau of Meteorology being overly cautious or was the weather for real.

We had no real idea what 10 – 40mm of rain would do to dirt roads out here. Would the gorges become dangerous with runoff? We tried our best to ask; the caravan park reception knew nothing about the weather or its impact; a young ranger was rather unconvincing in his assertion it would be fine. The best advice came from some workers sharing the campground “we’re back early due to risk, if it was a work trip would you do it?” No, we wouldn’t.

We went back and forward all day. Skip it and go to Derby, daytrip or just try our luck with our original plan. We prepared for all eventualities but leaned towards
