Since we had crossed the Nullarbor, we had been distinctly aware of the presence of Wedgetail Eagles. We’d been warned they were rare and caution was needed if they were feeding by the roadside.

We had travelled thousands of kilometres, seeing what we thought were possibly one or two flying eagles. They soared so high in the sky we could never be sure and we were yet to see one up close.

Today that changed as we saw two feasting on dead kangaroos by the roadside. Fortunately, they were well off the road, but we could see them staring us down as they paused their meal. Up close they were massive and intimidating; their height, wingspan and beaks made them unmistakable.

It was a sight worth the wait.
