The highlight of Coober Pedy had absolutely nothing to do with opals. It was the kangaroo rescue centre and joey orphanage.

An Art Gallery and Kangaroo Rescue held almost daily sessions where you could come along, feed the rescue ‘roos and if you were lucky, hold a joey. We were certainly lucky and after buying our art (thanks Tommy Crowe), we went out the back for a feed and cuddle.

It was amazing. It turns out kangaroos like wasabi peas (who would have thought). Then it was the main event, cuddling a joey. We all got a hold of Sir Jackie, a six month old red kangaroo, with the girls first in line. He was an energetic little fellow, but more than happy to snuggle and get a gentle pat. We have never been able to do something like this and it was worth the trek, wait and money for a few minutes of magic.
