Sometimes a day trip is in order. Just up the road (figuratively) lies Lamington National Park in the Scenic Rim. Best known for O’Reilly’s Rainforest Retreat and the 1937 Stinson plane crash rescue the family performed, it makes for a lovely day trip in South East Queensland. There are some great facilities at the top, allowing for accommodation, dining and camping options.

Access to the National Park is via a long section of narrow, twisty and deteriorated road. It’s definitely not one for the caravanners, it’s narrow single lane in some parts and barely two ways in others. If you make the effort to visit, make sure you do it all or stay a night or two. As enjoyable as this one was, the drive makes it a day trip we won’t repeat anytime soon.

We took a picnic with the view to doing a few of the short walks. Between the slower than expected drive and some disagreeable weather we didn’t quite get it all done, but what we finished was worth the effort. We picked the longer Morans Falls walk, taking you around and over the beautiful Morans Falls. The view from the top is stunning and our timing meant the recent rains had kept the falls flowing. Despite a quick march back, it just wasn’t going to be practical to fit in the second Python Rock walk. A shame, but not worth the whining children or a return after dark. We checked out the tree top walk too, harder to enjoy when it’s busy but it certainly gives you a different perspective.
