We had heard so many things about Mataranka. It’s famous for Bitter Springs, a beautiful naturally warm spring that you can float down and enjoy. So many people cannot be wrong and we just hoped that it would be a little quieter later in the season.
There is a small community and a small number of other attractions, but Mataranka is all about Bitter Springs. Grab your togs, goggles, a pool noodle or body board and float your way down. It’s not just about the warm water either. The water is amazingly clear and full of life. There is an entire underwater ecosystem to see, as well as just enjoying a slow float downstream.
Our visits (we made four visits) were excellent. Between the warm water and underwater viewing, we would have floated our way down about eight times. Fortunately for us, things were quieter as well. Being later in the season the daytime temperatures are climbing and the tourists start to thin.
We saw fish, many different underwater plants, searched for turtles (but saw none) and just enjoyed the water. It was so good we are debating making a second “just because” stop on our slow return south.
