The Desert Park also offered nighttime tours. After having such success with our nighttime tour at Zealandia in New Zealand, we decided to give the Alice Springs version a try.

It was ridiculous experience. Our guide was on her first solo tour after several years off on maternity leave, they were shorted staff due to illness and had another big private group doing a nighttime thing. These things could have made for a terrible experience, instead they made it incredible.

The guide had to feed the animals as we went (instead of them being pre-fed). Every conceivable creature therefore came out for its dinner. They wanted food and weren’t worried by our little group. Mala, Golden Bandicoot, echidna and other creatures ran around our feet. Even the very timid Bilby was spotted a few times. We walked and did nothing but spot rare and endangered animals the whole time.

We had never had such and experience and neither had our guide. The echinda pile on to feed on their minced meat from their special feeder was hilarious.
