We had booked a tour of the Whyalla Steel Works. Who says you can’t add a little engineering to your road trip.

None of us had toured a steel works before. We were a little surprised it was still possible. It turned out to be a bus tour (you stayed on the bus). It was still very interesting. The size of the place is enormous and it smelt like every other heavy industrial.

You could see enough of the process from to get an appreciation of it. Everything is massive and the heat and energy involved was obvious. At several places you could see the orange-yellow glow of the internal workings.

We all liked the final rolling process, watching red hot steel billets being rolled out into products was hypnotising.
