We have a thing about visiting the compass points of places we live. Steep Point happens to be the most westerly point in mainland Australia. We had to visit.

It was a long, long day. We drove just under 350km, a big chunk on the dirt and quite a bit on sandy 4WD tracks. We were prepared and besides being slow, it did go smoothly. It’s a very pretty drive, as almost the whole way is something to look at. We stopped at beaches and lookouts; spied different sections of shark bay; saw plenty of wild animals and sometimes just held on as we bumped around.

Steep Point was cool, there is even a natural window to frame the Indian Ocean from. We found a nice spot for lunch and could see fish feeding on the reef, as well as birds and some interesting plants.

All up we spent more than 10 hours on this little adventure. It was very tiring but worth every minute. Best of all, we did not get bogged or damaged.

At the Steep Point window, Indian Ocean views.
