Before we made our way to Monkey Mia, we stopped at the tourist centre, come gallery come museum. The big focus there was the story of the HMAS Sydney II.

In amazing detail it told how the pride of the Australia fleet in WW2 was sunk by a German raider. It resulted in the loss of all 645 on board, the largest maritime disaster in Australian history. Its wreck, and that of the Kormoran (the raider) had laid undiscovered until 2008.

The movie is incredible, telling the story overlaid with 3D footage obtained when they sent submersibles to the wrecks. The unknowns, loss of life and the fact the Sydney was undiscovered for so long makes this great tragedy both intensely interesting and profoundly sad.
