For the first time in Christian’s and second time in Abby’s working life, we officially tick the “unemployed” box. The easiest way to keep the money rolling in until we started the trip was to hold onto our jobs in New Zealand, pushing the remote working to the extreme. Two supportive employers made that happen, but the time has come and our work is done. Two weeks apart, our laptops and phones were returned, accounts disabled and passwords invalid. In a leap of faith we have no firm backup plans. If we need work, it’s interview time!

To really enjoy and make the most of our time travelling Australia we made the conscious decision not to work (at least for the early stage). We figured we’d give it some time before we worried about our rapidly diminishing financial position. At least we’d have an idea of what kind of work will work for us on the road. We could all destress and fully engage in our travels. Plus, two teachers are better than one and (perhaps optimistically) home schooling might be easier.

This is one of our first steps towards committing to long term travel. We might have ordered a caravan and bought a tow vehicle, but in the back of our minds we could always just find a house, a job or two and use them on the weekends and holidays. That security blanket is still there, but just got a little further away.
